What Teachers Can Change

“Too many teachers are constantly thinking that if they had more time, resources and space they could make a difference. For some teachers that could be true, but for most the last thing they need is more. They need different, and that’s what they struggle with. It’s simple: if your teaching practice is not having an effect on your students’ performance, you must change.”

You’ll Never Learn If You Can’t Remember

Before something is learned, it must pass through working memory. People with ADHD are often distracted, and might need to re-read a worksheet three times before the information travels through their working memory to the long-term. This is a problem. Here are solutions.

In the Future, Today’s Education Will Look Like ‘19th-Century Medicine’

The big secret in public education is that the variation in teacher quality is astounding. In America, it’s quite large. But in Canada the variation is much less pronounced. Why? Because they spend more time training their teachers, giving them the time and space to share lessons and take part in PLCs (professional learning communities).

Such a difficult choice-which poem? "The Raven"? "The Road Not Taken"? "Hope Is A Thing With Feathers"? I'm torn between a poem previously in my pocket-"The Rainy Day" by Longfellow- and tucking e e cummings' "anyone lived in a pretty how town"  back there. Hey, since there is no rule about only one poem in one pocket, maybe I'll put on my cargo pants and live it up!

What Does Poetry Do?

Poetry brings us immediately to the top of Bloom's Taxonomy of higher level thinking, triggering the growth of synapses in our brains as we struggle for personal meaning in the verse. Poetry satisfies our daily emotional nutritional requirements for serendipity, musical language, inspiration, mental challenge, comfort, schmaltz, and frequently, humor. Poetry is packaged in mystery, mathematical meter, and personal validation--equity in our own interpretations.

Matisse and Spring--What's Outside Your Window?

The Dessert: Harmony in Red, Henri Matisse http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Dessert:_Harmony_in_Red_%28The_Red_Room%29

Looks like Henri had trees in bloom outside his window.
Maybe he was listening to this music while he painted, which premiered the same year, 1908.

National Poetry Month: Poem #8

i carry your heart with me

by E. E. Cummings
i carry your heart with me(i carry it in
my heart)i am never without it(anywhere
i go you go,my dear; and whatever is done
by only me is your doing,my darling)
i fear
no fate(for you are my fate,my sweet)i want
no world(for beautiful you are my world,my true)
and it's you are whatever a moon has always meant
and whatever a sun will always sing is you

here is the deepest secret nobody knows
(here is the root of the root and the bud of the bud
and the sky of the sky of a tree called life;which grows
higher than the soul can hope or mind can hide)
and this is the wonder that's keeping the stars apart

i carry your heart(i carry it in my heart)
